My science projects

music

Influence of emotions on stimulus perception. Demonstrated by the example of fear and perception of musical stimuli.

I have conducted my own research, under the supervision of dr A. Pluta at the University of Warsaw. I have examined the influence of an emotional state - state of fear on the perception of musical stimuli. I hypothesized, that similarly to dimensions major - "happy", minor - "sad", it is the dimension of harmony and disharmony that reflects the states of fear and calmness.

Studying musical segmentation process and the associated cognitive workload in relation to the digitally implemented cognitive algorithm.

During my internship (April - June 2022) I have worked together with a PhD student Josephine Calandra (LABRI, Université de Bordeaux) on a project with interest to her thesis.
We have designed and conducted a study that would provide information about how musicians segment music (into phrases and larger sections) and we measured the cognitive charge associated with this task.
The goal was to compare the obtained results with the digital algorithm developed by Josephine and look for significant similarities and differences. The collected data is yet to be analyzed.

Ambiguity of Concepts in Cognitive Science: using distributive semantics to find out what Cognitive Scientists really mean

Group project. We have created a corpora from papers from the field of cognitive science. We created a word2vec model, that once given a specific "ambiguous" word, provided output of synonyms, drafting therefore the context of the word. Using the methods of distributive semantics, we wanted to extract the meaning of concepts often used in the interdisciplinary field of cognitive science and facilitate their understanding. The model is open for further enhancement.

Internship: Mindfulness, working with object

During my internship  had a chance to participate in a mindfulness meditation classes. After learning the method and experiencing the effects of this mediation technique, I was asked to design a study, that would verify the effectiveness of mindfulness on stress-release, concentration or cognitive functioning.

Internship: Hypnosis

I had a chance to intern at the Humboldt University in Berlin. The research group was conducting a project on hypnosis and its possible effects on decision making. More precisely, they wanted to find out if hypnosis treatment can help people with obesity making more healthy food choices. I was helping with the design of the study. In parallel we were learning about EEG data analysis. Due to covid, work in the laboratory was impossible, however I do have a previous EEG lab experience.
